Former New-York burlesque dancer, Tanqueray goes viral with epic story leading to $1.7 million in donations

It all started with a post about burlesque dancer Tanqueray that went seriously viral on Human of New York’s (HONY) Instagram page.

The post – and woman’s clear abundance of character – led to thousands of comments from people wanting to know more about her and the life she’s led.

Last week, photographer Brandon Stanton who runs HONY, launched a 32-part series of posts that would tell her incredible life story.

He also launched a GoFundMe page for Tanqueray, whose real name is Stephanie, to raise money for her healthcare as she’s fallen on tough times.

Since then ‘The Tanqueray Trust’ has raised more than $US1.7million.

What’s amazing is that Stanton is only 19 parts through Stephanie’s life story and the donations continue to pour in.

Her epic life story is a colourful one that’s captivated the online community with her tales of growing up, going to prison and then moving to New York.

Stephanie goes on to explain her life as a stripper in the city during the 1970s.

The story has everything from romance to mobsters to the secrets of former presidents – and it must come with a language warning.

Her larger than life attitude can be seen through the posts, leaving people wanting to give her the support she deserves for letting the world know her narrative.

Because of this Stanton, has provided a way for fans to help Stephanie and improve her quality of life at 76 years of age.

Many of you will remember this young lady,” Stanton wrote on Instagram.

“Tanqueray caused quite a stir a few months ago when she dropped some truth bombs on us, while wearing a hand-beaded faux mink coat that she made herself.

“What you don’t know is what happened afterward.

“Tanqueray – whose real name is Stephanie – sat for a series of 20 interviews with me, during which time I transcribed her entire life story.

“And whoa boy, what a story.”

Change of plans
Her circumstances have prompted a change to Stanton’s initial idea for telling her story.

“Stephanie is a born performer, so we were initially going to make a podcast out of it,” he said.

“But unfortunate circumstances have required a change in plans.

“Stephanie’s health has taken a bad turn, and she’s in a really tough spot.”

He went on to explain that as her story is shared, HONY will be raising money to ensure Stephanie can live her life in “comfort and dignity”.

“Stephanie has a lot of urgent needs, so her care will be expensive,” he wrote on HONY.

“But her story is priceless.

“If the series adds any value to your life over the next seven days, please consider making a contribution to our fundraiser through the link in bio.”

Stanton explained on the GoFundMe page that they’re being thoughtful with money with it being placed in a “trust to ensure that it provides sustainable, long term care” – with Stephanie’s blessing.

Resonating with fans
With the donations rapidly rising it appears Stephanie’s story is resonating with people.

“Can’t wait for the next post. This woman has lived a life that most people didn’t even know existed outside of movies and television shows,” one person said.

“Tanqueray single handedly saving us from 2020,” another added.

Even actress Jennifer Garner is following, asking the question on many people’s lips.

“Why is this not a @Netflix series?” she said.

Stephanie’s health has taken a bad turn, and she’s in a really tough spot. So I’m going to tell her story right here, right now. It’s the most ambitious storytelling I’ve ever attempted on the blog. It will unfold over the course of 32 posts. But if there’s anyone who can hold an audience for an entire week—it’s Tanqueray. As her story is shared, we will be raising money to ensure that Stephanie can live the rest of her life in comfort and dignity. Stephanie has a lot of urgent needs, so her care will be expensive. But her story is priceless.
