The rumour mills have been agog with authenticated information that a group of traditional rulers has been financially induced to endorse a particular candidate for the position in the House of Representatives. What does this portend? What ignoble promise does this represent? It means that we are quickly trudging back to antediluvian politics; the stone-age shenanigans which enthrones mediocrity in exchange for raw cash; the reckless politics which thrives shamelessly on buying patronage, and further impoverishing our hapless citizenry mentally and developmentally. Is this going to be our collective lot? God forbid!
Candidate Chidi Mark Obeta threw caution and decorum to the dogs the moment he contrived to buy the consciences of traditional rulers and other stakeholders, and stampeded them into approving a dubious endorsement of his candidacy to represent Nsukka/Igbo-Eze South Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives. He repudiated all the tenets that have stood us out as a civilised people when he entered into this unholy alliance which flies in the face of equity and justice. He expects that the governor of Enugu State, Chief Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, will go ahead and give assent to this hideous idiocy, and hand him the party ticket, pronto! Laughable indeed!
Thankfully, good reasoning shall always prevail over evil. Sound, altruistic contemplation shall always trump all demonic machinations to deprive our good people of quality representation.
Some of the traditional rulers who were hoodwinked into the fraudulent endorsement are Igwe Spencer Ugwoke of Obimo, Igwe Cletus Okwor of Az’Ebor, and Igwe Aloysius Ezugwu of Ibagwa Eg’. They are attempting to scupper the hopes of our constituents. Many traditional rulers are discountenancing this as they choose altruism over filthy lucre.
Our youths have raised their voices against the blatant injustice which threatens our very existence. We shall not tire to scream about this. All the traditional rulers and elders who are part of this evil conspiracy must do a rethink, and let their good judgement guide them accordingly. They must ask themselves what our yearning electorate stand to gain from this daylight robbery, and remember that the gods of Nsukka Asadu Ideke Ar’mona will visit untold punishment on all the characters that have designed to silence our voices concerning the matter at hand.
Our ancestors will stir in their graves, and apportion due revenge on any individual or group that sheepishly gets coerced into this unfair, diabolical plan. Every other aspirant to the House of Representatives seat in our Constituency has expressed deep disgust and rejection of the insulting resolution made by an unpopular few shamelessly intent on lording it over us.
Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi must listen to the voices of our people and allow a transparent process to elect the PDP representative. The time for imposition is long gone, and the people of Nsukka/Igbo-Eze South Federal Constituency have turned a historic corner in our quest for equitable, meritorious leadership. Patrick Asadu has failed us, but we cannot fathom the horrendous attempt to replace him with another character with shady antecedents, poor leadership skills and dubious integrity. We urge the governor not to be swayed by vain, expedient considerations. He must stand firm on the path of honour, and ensure that the principles of fair play are deployed in nominating the candidate to represent our people. Primaries should hold; and a winner should emerge from a process adjudged to be free and fair by all stakeholders.
